English Homework

“Cookie” came and told me that her classmate A. is not very nice. “Cookie” only gets to stay 10 minutes in her English lesson on Mondays, before she has to go to Home language lesson, which means she does not get to hear what the homework is for Friday. She asks her classmates but they often don’t tell her. So one Friday she was faced with a test she had not had a chance to study for. Today she found out that they are supposed to have an oral presentation on Friday about music and the person performing it. She happily told her classmate A. “I will do Julie Andrews then!”. Everyone in class know that “Cookie” loves Julie Andrews. Then this A. says “You can’t because I have chosen her already!”. She did that just to be mean. And “Cookie” is supposed to go to this girl’s Birthday party tomorrow evening on a school night. And she is told this late, about the project due! So in panic I tried to help her come up with something funny. All afternoon we have listened to the Andrews Sisters and Glenn Miller. She has finally settled for Glenn Miller since I have “In the Mood” for my ring signal on my mobile phone. But we have read a lot about both.

I found a new favourite on Youtube!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzlfcQ6E_RE (“Bei Mir Bistu Shein” by the Andrews Sisters! ) I must get it for my ipod! I have been sitting having the song on and singing along. It’s not easy! They sing quickly! Found it amazing that it’s an old jiddish song. Try to follow along and see how you do!:

Of all the boys I’ve known, and I’ve known some,
Until I first met you I was lonesome,
And when you came in sight, dear, my heart grew light
And this old world seemed new to me.
You’re really swell I have to admit, you
Deserve expressions that really fit you,
And so I’ve racked my brain, hoping to explain
All the things that you do to me.

Bei mir bistu shein, please let me explain,
“Bei mir bistu shein” means you’re grand.
Bei mir bistu shein, again I’ll explain,
It means you’re the fairest in the land.

I could say “bella, bella”, even say “wunderbar”.
Each language only helps me tell you
How grand you are.
I’ve tried to explain “Bei mir bistu shein”.
So kiss me and say you understand.

“Bei mir bistu shein”, you’ve heard it all before
But let me try to explain
“Bei mir bistu shein” means that you’re grand.
Bei mir bistu shein, it’s such an old refrain
And yet I should explain
It means I am begging for your hand.

I could say “bella, bella”, even say “wunderbar”.
Each language only helps me tell you
How grand you are.

I could say “bella, bella”, even say “wunderbar”.
Each language only helps me tell you
How grand you are.
I’ve tried to explain “Bei mir bistu shein”
So kiss me and say that you will understand.
